Purple Dresses

The violet shade was originally extracted from sea snails – an extremely complex and expensive process. For that reason, purple was reserved for kings and priests until the Middle Ages. Centuries later, it became more accessible and in the mid-20th century turned into the symbolic colour of the women’s movement. To this day, purple remains a fashion power shade that is constantly reinterpreted. Several times it has even been named Pantone Colour of the Year – in 2018 with “Ultra Violet” and in 2022 with the pastel lavender tone “Very Peri”. Why do purple dresses never go out of style? Because they symbolise strength, femininity and individuality in a timeless way.

The variety of purple tones makes this colour a true all-rounder. Winter types with very fair or very dark skin and dark hair shine in rich jewel tones such as deep violet or royal purple. Spring types with blond hair and a warm complexion look best in soft shades like lilac or lavender. Summer types with fair skin, blue or green eyes are flattered by bluish tones of purple, while autumn types with reddish hair and a golden undertone glow in deeper, reddish violet shades such as aubergine. In short: there is a perfect shade of purple for everyone.

Purple and violet are made for colour blocking. Their complementary shade is yellow – a combination that creates maximum contrast and intensity. Pairing a purple dress with lemon yellow or mustard makes a bold statement. But other strong colours such as orange, red, green, blue or pink also work beautifully with purple. Pastel tones, on the other hand, look especially charming when combined with soft hues like turquoise or powder blue. One of the most striking options is pairing deep aubergine with vibrant yellow – a look that guarantees attention.
