Cropped trousers for women – a love letter to the shorter length

You may still remember them being teased as "ankle swingers" – yet their true fashion moment came in the 1950s, when Audrey Hepburn turned the cropped cigarette trouser into a style statement: the 7/8 trouser, or cropped trouser. After a brief revival in the 1990s, it finally became a timeless basic with classic potential in the 2010s, in the shape of skinny cropped jeans and culottes. Today we love it in summer and winter alike. The cropped cut brings lightness into any look, shows off our favourite shoes and lends every outfit a wonderfully relaxed fashion attitude.

A fraction shorter – what defines the 7/8 trouser?

The mathematical 7/8 describes how much of the leg the trousers cover. The hem ends just above the ankle – usually around five to ten centimetres higher – revealing the slimmest part of the leg. Unlike three-quarter-length trousers, they therefore reach well past mid-calf. It is precisely this length that makes cropped trousers so flattering: the visible ankle creates a delicate impression and makes the whole silhouette look feminine and light. At the same time, loafers, slingbacks and trainers get their big moment. Whether slim, straight or wide-cut – the shortened length gives every trouser shape a modern twist.

Capri, gaucho and culotte – the cropped family

Not all cropped trousers are created equal. The classic 7/8 trouser ends just above the ankle, but there are other cropped styles worth knowing. Capri trousers are usually slim-cut and reach only to mid-calf. The culotte, by contrast, is wide and flowing: with the elegant appeal of a skirt but the comfort of trousers, it is a wonderfully pragmatic take on femininity. The gaucho trouser is similarly airy. It usually ends at calf level, has particularly wide legs and radiates a relaxed retro vibe. So the cropped family ranges from close-fitting and classic to voluminous and fashion-forward.

Proportions are key – how to style cropped trousers

Because the shortened hem visibly divides the silhouette, balanced proportions are everything when styling. Short tops and jackets are a perfect fit. Alternatively, tuck blouses and shirts fully into the waistband or opt for a French tuck. A high-waisted 7/8 culotte harmonises beautifully with a slim top, while a close-fitting cropped trouser can also take a more voluminous piece. The right shoes complete the look: loafers appear polished, trainers effortless and ballet flats feminine. Pointed mules, slingbacks or heels visually lengthen the leg. Avoid harsh colour contrasts and very chunky shoes, which can visually cut the look short.

From office chic to night-out glamour

At the office, cropped cigarette trousers with a blouse, blazer and loafers are an unbeatable team. Off duty, comfortable 7/8 chinos meet a T-shirt, trainers and a denim jacket. Warm summer days feel best in white, wide cropped trousers with a strappy top, sandals and a basket bag. In the evening, things can turn more glamorous: combine faux-leather cropped trousers or a black cropped style with a silk top, fitted blazer and slingbacks. And in winter? Choose styles in corduroy, tweed or firm jersey and wear them with close-fitting ankle boots. This way, cropped trousers see you stylishly through every season and almost every occasion.
