While trends like athleisure wear have only recently conquered the fashion world, the blouse has been a wardrobe essential for centuries. Since the 14th century, when buttons became widespread across Europe, the blouse has been a staple in women’s fashion. Originally a practical garment with a button placket, it soon became the perfect companion for trousers, suits, skirts, and two-pieces – and an integral part of businesswear. Once considered conservative, the blouse is now enjoying a stylish revival: delicate silk blouses with floral or Asian prints bring lightness, off-shoulder blouses reinvent the neckline, and chic bow blouses replace the classic shirt blouse.
Curious to rediscover this timeless piece? Here’s an overview of the most popular blouse styles, complete with styling tips.
The shirt blouse is the feminine counterpart to the men’s shirt and remains a cornerstone of business attire.
Key features of the shirt blouse:
Tip: Women with a fuller bust should size up to avoid gaping buttons. Many specialist retailers now offer anti-gaping shirt blouses with extra button placement in the bust area.
The bow blouse (or pussy-bow blouse) replaces the collar with long fabric ties that can be worn as a bow, knot, or scarf. Feminine and elegant, it works just as well in the office as it does for social occasions.
Key features of the bow blouse:
Since the bow tie already acts as a strong eye-catcher, the bow blouse usually doesn’t have a button placket and is often a pull-over style. In trendy pastel shades, it’s a fashionable alternative to a classic shirt when paired with a business suit or pantsuit.
The wrap blouse is the ultimate figure-flattering top. Like a wrap dress, the ruching at the waist creates a beautiful silhouette and accentuates the waistline, giving an hourglass effect that visually slims every curve. Wrap blouses come in the classic style as a front-open blouse tied around the waist with two long straps, or in a modern pull-on design, where the wrap effect is built into the design—no complicated tying required.
Key features of the wrap blouse:
The off-shoulder blouse, also known as the Carmen blouse, has its roots in Andalusian traditional dress and became a global fashion hit in the 1970s.
Key features of the off-shoulder blouse:
The ruffle blouse is defined by its lavish use of fabric layers, jabots, and draping – perfect for women who love a bold fashion statement.
Key features of the ruffle blouse:
The long blouse is a top that reaches at least mid-thigh, making it almost like a short dress or tunic. Long blouses come in a variety of styles: from the extended version of a classic button-down with a full placket and point collar to pull-over styles in ethnic designs or floral prints.
Key features of the long blouse:
The long blouse is perfect for both casual wear and the office. This style is especially popular on long workdays or business trips, as it’s worn over the bottom rather than tucked in like a shorter blouse, providing extra comfort. Wide-cut long blouses pair best with slim 7/8 trousers or comfortable leggings. In winter, a long blouse works perfectly for layering with a scarf, cardigan, and vest.
The blouse top, often also called a pull-over blouse, is a style without buttons or wrap elements. It’s a one-piece top that you slip on over your head. Today, the blouse top is a classic in business fashion. Made from fabrics like silk or satin, it’s the perfect match for a blazer and skirt.
Key features of the blouse top:
The blouse body combines the elegance of a blouse with the practicality of a body, ensuring it stays perfectly in place.
Key features of the blouse body:
Blouses live through their details – especially the neckline. A classic shirt collar exudes confidence and a business-ready attitude, while a deep V-neckline highlights femininity and elegance. Round necklines create a simple, everyday look, and stand-up collars add a modern, minimalist touch. Playful pussy bows or delicate lace trims can instantly transform the overall feel. Ultimately, the neckline defines whether a blouse appears casual, formal or romantic – making it a versatile key piece in every wardrobe.

You may have noticed that men’s shirts have the button placket on the right, while women’s blouses are buttoned on the left. But why?
For men, the origin lies in warfare: weapons such as swords or daggers were usually worn on the left so they could be drawn with the right hand. A right-side placket prevented interference in combat.
For women, there are two main theories. One is practical: right-handed women often carried a child on their right arm, leaving the left hand free to open clothing – so left-side buttons made sense. Another theory points to social status: wealthy women had maids to dress them, and maids found it easier to button from their right-hand perspective – meaning the buttons ended up on the left for the wearer.
To this day, there’s no single definitive answer, but the left-side button placket has become a defining feature of women’s blouses.
