In winter, everything is clear, it's cold, we wrap ourselves up in thick knitwear and wear long woollen coats. In summer, we like it light, airy, breathable and usually colorful. But the periods in between, with their fluctuating temperatures and moody showers, require more than fashionable black-and-white thinking.

In spring and fall, when the mornings are cool, the sun warms up at midday and the wind whistles in the evening, many people face the same challenge: what do I wear when the weather is constantly changing? The answer is simple: this is the season for transitional dresses. They are the uncomplicated solution for days when it's 8 degrees in the morning and 22 degrees in the afternoon.

What are transitional dresses?

The easiest way to describe it is this: Transitional dresses can be cleverly styled to adapt to changing temperatures during the day. They feel good both in the cool morning hours and on mild sunny afternoons.

Their strength is that they combine lightness with a certain warmth and functionality. They close the fashion gap between thin summer dresses and tightly woven winter dresses. Frequently chosen fabrics are cotton, satin and jersey. Fine knits and wool blends are also included. They are usually extremely easy to combine and can be worn with blazers or cardigans. Midi and maxi lengths leave plenty of scope, even for cooler temperatures.

Transitional dresses have few limits when it comes to cuts: from flowing to shirt blouse to wrapped, everything is possible. All looks have one thing in common: they can be styled effortlessly and in a variety of ways and look stylish on their own, with jackets or coats and with boots or ballerinas.

Spring & Autumn? Seasonal differences

When we enjoy the first warming rays of sunshine in May, we prefer lighter materials and long for color. Soft pastel shades or floral patterns get us in the mood for the warm season.

In the fall, when we come out of the sun, transitional fashion can be a little warmer. In terms of color, muted natural tones, dark reds, browns, blacks and grays usually dominate in autumn.

Popular types of clothing for the change of season

Transitional dresses are in season between summer and winter. Their big advantage is that they look just as good with boots as they do with loafers or wedges. And this quickly makes it clear that certain dress styles are very popular here.

Midi dresses - the perfect length for everything in between

If the weather can't make up its mind, neither can the dress length. Neither 'long' nor 'short', but right in the middle - so it's no wonder that the medium length of midi dresses hits the spot. Loose-fitting styles made from firmer fabrics look elegant and understated. They wrap warmly around the legs and can be worn effortlessly with boots, sneakers and light coats.

Fine knitwear - ideal when the thermometer is in yo-yo mode

The temperatures are dropping and our thoughts quickly turn to knitwear. In their thinner and therefore more elegant version, knitted dresses are among the fashion favorites in the transitional period. They exude a certain elegance and flatter the silhouette with their typical structure. A dress with a tight top and flared skirt looks equally stylish with slim booties or sneakers. Sometimes the fine knit is also slightly transparent, so you can play with colorful shirts underneath.

Shirt dresses - harbingers of the change of season

Shirt dresses really come into their own in spring and fall. Whether with a graphic print, playful details or in combination with knee-high socks - these classics win the 'best dressed' award wherever they appear. They can be adapted particularly well to different temperatures, for example by wearing a thin turtleneck underneath or unbuttoning the dress relatively wide to expose the legs. It could hardly be more versatile: all buttons closed, more neckline, focus on the waist with the help of a belt - a shirt dress can be used in many ways, even as a "coat". Ideal for the transitional season.

Wrap dresses - a guarantee for the perfect temperature balance

The dresses with the flexible cut are also able to cope with changing weather. Usually made from slightly firmer material in all kinds of color palettes, they add lightness to a layered look. Wrap dresses can be styled wonderfully over tights and a long-sleeved undergarment. It is precisely this versatility that makes them an indispensable favorite between summer and winter.

Cardigans are also perfect for changeable weather. Short styles emphasize the waist and harmonize particularly well with flared dresses. Long cardigans, on the other hand, create a relaxed, cozy look. Fine knits tend to look elegant, while coarse knits are casual and autumnal.

Worlds of color and patterns in transition

The effect of a dress is not only determined by the cut and material, but also by the color and pattern. In September, airy dresses with flounces and ruffles are still suitable for warm days, but muted tones and patterns such as paisley or check already give them an autumnal look. While neutral and earthy colors such as beige, olive or rust red dominate in autumn, stripes, checks and paisley characterize the transitional looks for winter.

In spring, the color palette becomes lighter and softer: pastel shades, white and bold colors bring freshness, while floral prints create a romantic, feminine effect. Soft colors and playful patterns are key for transitional dresses in spring - even firmer fabrics already have an early summer look.

Combine transitional dresses correctly

Whether combined with a cardigan, boots or sneakers - transitional dresses leave plenty of scope for creative style extensions that fit effortlessly into any style. Find out here how you can combine your dress for all weather conditions.

Layering is key

Layered looks are ideal for changeable temperatures. Not only warmth is important, but also a harmonious silhouette. Contrasts are particularly exciting: combine tight pieces with wide ones, play with patterns, materials or color blocking. Flowing fabrics, fine knitwear or faux leather add depth to the look. Transitional dresses can be combined with a thin turtleneck or T-shirt and a cardigan. Oversized cashmere sweaters also provide a modern twist. Make sure to balance volume and cut - this way, the look is both casual and feminine.

Jackets are a must

Jackets are real style makers and instantly give transitional dresses a new look. A leather jacket gives romantic dresses a cool, edgy touch, while a classic trench coat creates timeless elegance. A blazer is particularly suitable for office or city looks - whether oversized or slim-fitting. Denim jackets also harmonize perfectly with knitted or midi dresses and create a relaxed look. With the right jacket, a transitional dress can always be reinterpreted and adapted to the occasion or weather.

Don't forget your tights

Tights make summery transitional dresses instantly suitable for autumn and add warmth and texture to the look. Whether classic black, transparent, patterned or skin-colored - they have a decisive influence on the effect of the outfit. Transparent models with 20 or 30 DEN look light and elegant, while opaque versions provide more warmth and a modern fall look. Light-colored or patterned tights set fashionable accents and give simple dresses more excitement. This turns a summery dress into a versatile transitional look in no time at all.

Get the transitional look going

The choice of shoes can completely change the style of a transitional dress. Mary Janes or ballerinas add a romantic touch to shirt dresses, while cowboy boots look casual and cool. Ankle boots and boots go particularly well with midi and knitted dresses and bring more fall character to the look. If you want to visually elongate your legs, go for tight-fitting sock boots or narrow boots. Sneakers, on the other hand, create a relaxed everyday look and give elegant dresses a modern, uncomplicated effect.

Dos and don'ts - your perfect style between summer and winter

If you're freezing in the morning and sweating at lunchtime, you're usually missing a flexible layer - it's not the dress that's wrong. The best transitional outfits can be easily adapted during the day.

Dos

Rely on layering

Choose fabrics such as cotton, viscose, fine knitwear

Choose straight cuts

Prefer versatile midi lengths

Combining oversized blazers

Choose spring and autumn colors

Putting on tights

Clever shoe combinations

Don'ts

Wear fabrics that are too summery

Combine heavy winter materials with airy fabrics, e.g. down coat

Wrong jacket lengths - combine short jackets or a coat with midi dresses instead of knee-length jackets

Ignore proportions

Think purely functional, it's about the mix of 'warm' and 'stylish'

Only focus on trends - classics such as shirt dresses are ideal

Wear winter shoes that are too robust
