There’s nothing I love more than strolling through Europe’s major cities with my best friend twice a year—fromone sightseeing highlight to the next café, from a scenic spot to the trendiest bar. We usually travel with just carry-on luggage, because for us that symbolizes the lightheartedness and spontaneity of a city trip.

And we take it easy when it comes to packing, too. We choose wisely and thoughtfully. As we do, we ask ourselves: What should we pack to look stylish and cool—without overloading our luggage? The answer is surprisingly simple: a dress.

Why a dress is the perfect travel piece for your next city trip

City trips are usually 3–4-day getaways, and we love to travel light. If you want to pack smart, a dress is the perfect choice. With just one piece, you’ll have a complete outfit that also leaves room in your suitcase. Flowing silhouettes and breathable fabrics ensure a comfortable fit. Whether you’re walking uphill or downhill in the city of your choice, nothing will restrict or hold you back—even on long days full of discoveries with up to 23,000 steps.

Action beats a hotel or Airbnb accommodation. On our city trip, we want to see and experience as much as possible and soak up the city's vibe. We love hearing the locals speak, enjoying traditional dishes, letting our gaze wander over the magnificent sights, or looking out over the sea from the city harbor. Most of the time, with our limited time, we don’t want to spend hours in the bathroom or in front of the mirror, agonizing over what to wear.

If you want to enjoy the moment in all its beauty without any frills and still look great, you can count on this dress 24/7. After all, a dress can be transformed with just a few accessories. Sneakers, a sweater draped over your shoulders, and a roomy crossbody bag will see you through the day; in the evening, you can switch up your look with Mary Janes, wedges, or strappy sandals, and add a blazer and statement jewelry for a night out at a restaurant. This way, a dress stylishly takes adventurous women through the entire day—from their first coffee to dinner in the evening.

The Best Dresses for City Trips

Not every dress is equally suitable for long days in the city. Dresses with classic cuts and comfortable fabrics that offer plenty of flexibility are especially practical.

Shirt-Style Dresses

With their timeless cut, these classics can be styled to look both casual and elegant, and they’re perfect for handling temperature changes throughout the day. So you can easily wear a light turtleneck under a slightly unbuttoned blouse dress or add a pair of tights.

Midi dresses

Midi dresses stand out for their perfect balance of comfort and style—ideal for long sightseeing tours. They pair perfectly with sneakers, which add a touch of groundedness to these often patterned styles, and can be combined with faux leather jackets or blazers for an incredibly chic look.

T-shirt dresses

For those who are laid-back and prefer a particularly low-maintenance look, a simple T-shirt dress is the ideal choice. Its sporty, relaxed vibe rubs off on the wearer. Accessories make all the difference with these very neutral looks. From caps to fanny packs to loafers, anything goes—not to mention how comfortable it is.

Knit Dresses

For trips to cities with cooler temperatures or during the transitional seasons, knit dresses are a stylish choice. They keep you comfortably warm while giving you a modern, put-together look. Teddy jackets or slim-fit calf-length coats, as well as boots and sneakers, are great choices to pair with them.

A real hidden gem for frequent travelers is the so-called "suitcase dress."
Thanks to its wrinkle-resistant materials, it retains its shape even after hours in a travel bag and is ready to wear right away. At the same time, it stands out for its versatility: With just a few simple steps, it can be transformed from a relaxed daytime look into an elegant evening outfit. How to Put Together the Perfect City Break Outfit with a Dress

To make sure your dress not only looks great on your city trip but also feels comfortable all day long, it’s all about choosing the right pieces to pair it with.

1. Shoes – so you can get around with ease

Flat shoes are a must for long days, cobblestone promenades, or sandy paths along the beach. Comfortable sneakers, Birkenstocks, sandals, or loafers ensure that even after walking many kilometers, you’ll still want to explore more.

2. Layering—because the weather can change

In the morning, the sun is shining and temperatures are moderate, then clouds and showers roll in, and when the sun comes out again in the afternoon, it gets really hot? In the evening, you’ll feel a chill when you’re outside. It’s always a good idea to check the weather app and pack some layering pieces. Often, a light cardigan or a denim jacket is all you need—and maybe a warm cotton shirt to wear underneath.

3. Accessories – form follows function

Practical accessories like sunglasses, a hat, color-coordinated tights, and a small umbrella can save the day. The best part: They not only protect you from unpredictable weather, but also add a touch of style.

4. Bags – so you can carry everything with you

For a full day on the road, you should not only have the essentials with you but also keep your hands free. Bags with plenty of storage space are ideal for giving you the freedom to explore on your own. Backpacks are especially practical because they’re comfortable to carry; if you prefer a more stylish look, crossbody bags are a cool alternative.

Good to Know: Anti-Theft Tips for City Trips

Crossbody bag instead of a shoulder bag: Bags worn across the body are significantly harder to steal than those worn loosely over the shoulder.

Use lockable compartments: Zippers, hidden interior compartments, and lockable pockets provide extra protection for your smartphone, wallet, and passport.

Carry valuables close to your body: Keep important documents and money in inside pockets or compartments close to your body whenever possible.

Choose understated accessories: Flashy jewelry, brand-name items on full display, or bulging outer pockets can attract unwanted attention. Subtle yet stylish accessories are often the better choice for city trips.

The Unparalleled Vibe of Major Cities: Outfit Ideas for Different Cities

Every city has its own unique style—and that’s exactly what you can use as inspiration for your outfit. In no time at all, you’ll create a look that’s not only practical but also perfectly suits the atmosphere of your trip.

Paris – See you in Paris?

Feminine & elegant: Even if we can never quite match French women’s sense of style, there are still outfits that look just right in the City of Love. Flowing midi dresses or shirt dresses in classic colors like black, nude tones, or navy look effortlessly chic when paired with ballerinas, slingbacks, or simple loafers. In the summer, woven handbags are everywhere throughout the city; accessories like silk scarves and fabric hats round out the outfit.

Rome – La dolce Vita in the Eternal City

Light and airy & chic: The style of Roman women is more understated than the eccentric style found in southern Italy. They are exceptionally well-dressed—elegant and relaxed at the same time; flip-flops are a rare sight. High-quality materials are the norm; fabrics like cotton and viscose are ideal for hot weather. Wrap dresses or loose-fitting midi dresses allow for freedom of movement in warm temperatures. Sandals and sunglasses add that relaxed, Mediterranean touch.

Copenhagen – between Scandinavian minimalism and the “hygge” way of life

Minimalist & practical: On the streets of the Danish capital, minimalist chic meets creative cool. Scandinavian style is defined by clean silhouettes, patterns like plaid and sometimes polka dots, and understated colors. Simple knit dresses in beige, gray, or black pair perfectly with white sneakers and a functional backpack—clean, modern, and perfect for everyday wear.

Barcelona – Catalonia's vibrant capital

Summery & comfortable: The look of the chicas from Barcelona is characterized by an effortless, casual style, where different pieces are playfully mixed and matched. You’ll often find skillful style contrasts paired with a love of experimentation. Colors, lightness— printed dresses capture the spirit of this vibrant metropolis. Colorful bandanas tied around the head and stylish retro sunglasses are just as en vogue as crocheted mesh bags.

Avoid Common Mistakes When Picking Out City Break Outfits

Uncomfortable Shoes

As stylish as they may seem, shoes that pinch, have high heels, or offer little support quickly become a burden during long days of sightseeing. Comfortable sneakers, sandals, or well-worn loafers are a better choice.

Packing too many clothes

An overpacked suitcase makes choosing outfits complicated and limits your flexibility. A well-thought-out capsule wardrobe, where all the pieces can be mixed and matched, is a better option.

Choose delicate fabrics

Fabrics that wrinkle easily or require a lot of care aren't ideal for travel. Durable, wrinkle-resistant fabrics ensure that your outfit stays looking sharp all day long.

Underestimating the weather

City trips often mean changeable weather. Without a light jacket, layering pieces, or rain gear, things can quickly become uncomfortable.
